Yup, I have been selected for the Charlottetown qualifying event for ArtLove, part of the Shediac Hom’Art Festival!
We’ll be creating original paintings, 18” x 24”, in only 20 minutes!
If you’re available on June 7 to come to The Guild in Charlottetown, you’re invited to attend! Winners will be selected jointly by judges and the audience, and all artworks will be entered into a silent auction. Please come and cheer me on, maybe vote for me, perhaps take an original artwork home?
…but the only trouble is, I’ve never completed a painting in 20 minutes before. I’ve never finished an artwork bigger than 12” x 16” (which took many months), and I haven’t yet started an artwork bigger than 16” x 20”!
Well, I’ve got less than two weeks to practice, but I’m going to go for it!
First though – before I try to adapt my painting style for speed and size – I’m trying to finish up some pieces that have been in progress (in my usual slow and relaxed way of reveling in details and accuracy), while I’m still in the flow with them.
Here’s what’s currently taking turns on my easel:
For the acrylic painting below, I deliberately set it up to be lighter and cooler than I intend the final result to be, to prepare for an overall glaze of Transparent Burnt Sienna, mixed with acrylic glazing medium and water to increase the transparency. I recorded the glazing process, which took about half an hour of trial and error, then I sped up the video to just over 7 minutes:
Before glazing:

After glaze:

I did some further adjustments after, and I think it might be finished now, although the lighting was poor for this pic:

Untitled (Guernsey Cove Backlit Cliff), work in progress/not final photo
by Rebeka Darylin
Acrylic on cradled wood panel
12″ x 12″ x 0.75″
I will set it out of sight for a few days and then consider if there’s anything I need to adjust before I declare it finished and sign it.
Also, I need to figure out a title!
Working name has been GCBC, for Guernsey Cove Backlit Cliff – to differentiate from GCSC – its “Sunlit” sibling, which is at a much earlier stage of progress:

Acrylic on canvas panel
9” x 12”
But I think I’ll focus on finishing this one next, so I will be able say the largest painting I have finished is 16” x 20”:

by Rebeka Darylin
Acrylic on MDF panel
16” x 20”
All pieces shown above are reserved for the Art Show at Sir Andrew MacPhail Homestead in July, where they will be for sale.
