Check it out: I made my first time-lapse video of a painting session!
This shows me working on the painting for half an hour, getting a feel for the clouds, and their volume and depth and shadows, all compressed into less than 25 seconds for the social media version, and about 90 seconds for this “long” version on my website.
This landscape is still in early stages, and I tend to work in many translucent layers. Starting with a white panel, I had done about half an hour before I thought of recording. Then after a break, I recorded this second 30 minute session for the video.
(I tried to record the next session, too, but I didn’t realize until after that my phone camera was on the wrong setting. Clearly I need more practice with it.)

At 16″ x 20″ it’s not a “large” painting, but it is for me. It’s the largest artwork I’ve begun since I started landscape painting in 2022. I usually work on 9″ x 12″ or smaller, and I aim to take up no more space than I need while making art, because currently my studio consumes the dining half of the combo living/dining room. No eating at the table in this household!
But even with art supplies piled everywhere, I try to maintain enough room on the other side of the table for Spouse to work on creative stuff regularly, too. Because everyone benefits from having time and space and resources for creative play. (See “Your Brain on Art” by Susan Magsamen and Ivy Ross.)
On the topic of encouraging creativity for those around me, it is part of why I am pushing myself to be brave and record and share videos of working on my art. I’d like to build up to painting en plein air around the village and participating in public demos by June (my local artist group is tentatively planning something). Eventually I hope to offer to teach painting class at PEI Community School of Murray Harbour (where I’ve volunteered and taught knitting since 2023), so I will be brave and throw those intentions out there publicly, too!
One more reveal: I hope to finish and include this painting in the 2025 Art Show and Sale at Sir Andrew MacPhail Homestead that will be happening in July. I am thrilled to have been invited to participate this year.
